Now in its sixth year, the annual BDO SA State Business Survey forms the basis of the company’s efforts to lobby for a better deal for all South Australian businesses.

BDO Adelaide Managing Partner Rudy Pieck says the survey seeks the business community’s views and opinions on the state of the South Australian economy, the impacts of current policy on business and any necessary reforms.

Opening today, the responses to the survey will inform BDO’s advocacy and facilitate discussion ahead of the 2020-21 state budget.

“Businesses have been remarkably candid in sharing their views in the past and we look forward to hearing what they have to say again in 2019,” says Pieck.

“Small to medium businesses form the backbone of the South Australian economy and help make this State a great place to live and work – when they speak, we should all listen to what they have to say.”

The survey, which takes less than 15 minutes to complete, asks business owners about their outlook for the coming year and their opinions on everything from the recent changes to payroll tax and land tax to what they’d ask the Premier about if they had five minutes alone with Steven Marshall.

“Last year, 41% of respondents said it was very important for the budget to return to surplus, reducing State debt,” Pieck says.

“It will be interesting to see what businesses have to say about the debt levels announced in the 2019/20 State Budget.”

Pieck says the difficulty in attracting the right staff, payroll tax and the cost of energy are some issues that are consistently raised by businesses in the survey, but there are new issues to consider as well.

“We are also seeing issues like emerging technologies, business model disruption and environmental and social responsibility become increasingly important.”

Pieck says that only the collective data will be published and provided to Government, Opposition and relevant industry bodies, while no individual response will be identified and no individual data will be provided to any third party.

Go here to complete the survey. Businesses that take part will be entered into a draw to win a a $500 Cash Gift Card and will receive a copy of the survey when it is published on September 24.
