Oldman has held the role for the past nine years and will finish at the end of the year to return to the United Kingdom.

“It has been a tremendous privilege to be the director of the South Australian Museum and to lead this incredible institution,” he said in a statement.

“The collections are internationally significant, and the quality of the museum’s research is recognised around the world.”

During Oldman’s tenure, the museum posted record attendances at a number of major exhibitions, renewed its focus on Indigenous culture and maintained its leading position in winning competitive scientific research grants and creating joint research positions.

It also secured government funding for an $86.5 million storage facility set to open in 2024.

Museum chair Kim Cheater said Oldman had made an enormous contribution, especially during the challenging environment of the COVID-19 pandemic.
