Tony Kanellos is currently Cultural Collections Manager and Curator of the Santos Museum of Economic Botany at the Botanic Gardens.

He has managed and curated 24 exhibitions there and has overseen an increase in annual visitor numbers from 13,000 to 72,000.

Chairman of the Carrick Hill Trust Peter Kennedy says Kanellos’ extensive experience at the Botanic Gardens will be invaluable at the Springfield site.

“Mr Kanellos joins us at a time when we are preparing to re-open Carrick Hill with a new gallery, a re-invigorated café and new dimensions to the rooms of this historic house,” he said.

“He will also help shape the new Pavilion building, which will be a dynamic commercial element in Carrick Hill re-imagined.

“He will join an experienced team of personnel and volunteers who have been working to improve the house, gardens and grounds and we look forward to working with him.”

Carrick Hill is undergoing internal renovations, which will see a number of changes including the opening of the attic to be used as a new exhibition space, and the refurbishment of the
gift shop.

Kanellos says he is looking forward to building upon the legacy of Carrick Hill, which Bill and Ursula Hayward bequeathed to the public of South Australia.

“There are not many places that could lure me away from the Museum of Economic Botany and the Botanic Gardens but there is something very special about Carrick Hill,” he said.

“This has been a dream of mine for many years and I look forward to taking on the privilege and the responsibility of caring for another of Adelaide’s treasures.”

He takes up the role on July 1.
