Australia’s second largest telco, in February announced a third quarter profit of $227 million.

The Australian on Tuesday cited internal documents showing the company was considering cutting its workforce by 10 per cent – or 1,000 jobs- as part of a wide-ranging cost-cutting exercise under chief executive Allen Lew.

“We will need to make further changes to the way we organise ourselves to help support our business goals, but we have no specific changes to share right now,” Optus said in a statement.

“Optus does not have plans to make 1,000 roles redundant.”

The Australian reported the Singapore Telecom-owned Optus was cutting costs to help fund its deal for exclusive Australian broadcast rights for the English Premier League from next season.
