His shock departure comes following a restructure of Business SA which resulted in four managers being cut.

Cairney, who was made redundant after 11 years with the business advocacy group, told InDaily this morning he would take a bit of time to “refocus”.

“These things happen,” he said.

“It’s not about me; there were several managers [made redundant].

“I’m not sure [what I’ll do] at this stage.”

However, Cairney said he remained “passionate” about business development in SA and would continue to work, as “a lot needs to be done”.

In a statement this morning, Business SA said the restructure produced a “flatter and leaner” group to take on the state’s next business challenges.

“Business SA has recently undergone a restructure to ensure that the organisation continues to meet the needs of its members and the broader business community in an effective and agile manner, particularly as the state’s economy is clearly going to face difficult times in the next few years.

“The new, flatter and leaner management structure will ensure a continuation of Business SA’s strong policy advocacy for business and its high-quality training and consulting services.

“It also reflects that the organisation has recognised the need for a different mix of skills and experience at senior management level.”

Nigel McBride remains chief executive of Business SA.
