Fuel, power, food top consumer concerns

Jul 30, 2015

Consumers are most concerned about the price of electricity, petrol and food, with renters, low-income earners and unemployed people among the hardest hit, a survey shows.

Choice’s latest Consumer Pulse Report, released Thursday, showed 81 per cent of respondents were worried about the price of power in the June quarter, making it the most concerning item for households.

Seventy-eight per cent of consumers were worried about the price of fuel, with the same percentage concerned about food and grocery prices.

Choice chief executive Alan Kirkland said cost pressures were hitting some parts of the community hard.

“Renters, low-income households and the unemployed (are) most likely to be struggling, and families with school-aged kids the group most concerned about rising household expenses,” he said.

Choice said consumer anxiety over every major household expense had increased on all fronts.

In every state except NSW, only about one in four Australians are optimistic about the economy (in NSW about 37 per cent believe the economy is in good shape).

For the fifth consecutive survey, about 30 per cent of Australians said it was difficult to get by on their current income.
