Bold leadership a national imperative

An informed debate over the policy directions that will deliver the investment and productivity required for future economic growth is now a national imperative, according to Business SA Chief Executive, Nigel McBride.

Reflecting on recent political developments in Canberra and Adelaide, McBride said uncertainty and inertia corrodes business confidence which, in turn, dampens the investment that is vital for economic growth. As activity slows, consumers become nervous about their jobs, restrain their spending, and the cycle continues.

“Australia has many important issues to debate and decide but the discussion required in political circles has been distracted for far too long by self-interest on both sides of the political divide,” McBride said.

“On the Federal front, a stalled 2014 Budget is about to be overwhelmed by the 2015 Budget, the preparation of which is now an even greater challenge given that so many elements of the last year’s Budget have failed to gain favour with key senators,” he said.

“With the resolution of the Liberal leadership issue this week, I hope we see a return to the serious matter of governing the nation. We also need to see the Labor Party make a meaningful  contribution to the policy debate rather than focussing on the day-to-day machinations of Parliament .”

McBride said there were encouraging signs on the State front with Premier, Jay Weatherill, announcing major consultations and engagement on questions ranging from changing the State’s time zone and potentially expanding the nuclear industry to reforming the tax system.

“Tax, time zones, and the nuclear question are major issues and Business SA welcomes the leadership the Premier is showing, and we look forward to making a significant contribution to the discussions now underway.

“No-one has a mortgage on good ideas and it is vital that all sectors of the community contribute to the discussions to come in South Australia and beyond. It is equally important that our political leadership hears the voice of the people and has the courage and conviction to push forward an agenda for real economic reform and job creation.”
