Woman dies after five-car crash on Port River Expressway

A woman has died and three people are in hospital after a five-car crash on the Port River Expressway last night.

A 38-year-old woman from Port Adelaide who originally fled the scene has been charged with a range of offences including death by dangerous driving.

Police and emergency services were called to the Port River Expressway around 9.35pm after reports of the collision.

A 26-year old woman from North Haven, a passenger of a red Toyota Prius involved in the crash, died at the scene.

The driver, a 26-year old woman from North Haven, and a 29-year old man from Seaford who was a passenger in the Toyota Prius, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

The driver of another vehicle, an 18-year old woman from Broadview, was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses to the crash informed police that the driver of a Holden Cruze involved in the crash, ran from her vehicle and was last seen on Eastern Parade.

Police searched the area and located and arrested the woman nearby.

She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving, aggravated due care, leave the scene of an accident, fail to exchange details after an accident and resist police. 

She was refused bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court later today.

The Port River Expressway remains closed in both directions between Eastern Parade and Hanson Road, and will do for some time this morning while Major Crash examine the scene.

The woman’s death is the 59th life lost on SA roads this year, compared to 83 at the same time last year.
