Police allege the 63-year-old fired as many as five shots into  airport windows at about 1:25pm on Sunday before being apprehended by federal police.

No one was injured during the incident but the airport was evacuated and remained closed for about three hours.

The man will appear before the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, where police will oppose bail.

He has been charged with discharging a firearm at a building, unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a firearm near a person causing alarm.

Police said the man did not go through airport security and sat near the check-in counters before firing shots at the windows.

The airport was evacuated shortly and parts of the terminal were locked down, while passengers who had boarded planes were stuck on the tarmac for hours before being allowed to disembark.

The airport resumed normal operations before 5pm. “Please check your travel plans directly with your airline if you are travelling today,” its management said in a tweet.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to the community or to other passengers.
