Police said a single lane each way had been reopened, with a 25 kilometres per hour speed limit.

An 800m section of Cross Rd was closed to traffic after police and emergency crews were called to Cumberland Park at about 12:45 after reports an excavator carrying out night works had hit a gas main.

Nearby residents were woken and told to evacuate their homes,

MFS station officer Graham Hughes said the major gas line that runs down Cross Road had been damaged in the excavation and up to eight gas lines may need to be shut down.

“It wasn’t till we arrived there that we realised the severity of it,” he told ABC Radio this morning.

“There are a number of lines that feed off it, so it’s a major junction point.

“There’s going to be significant gas supply issues today and it’s going to be some time before that’s repaired.”

Hughes said MFS crews are attempting to disperse the leaking gas as much as possible and have eliminated all ignition points.

“[The gas] was really settling around the incident area and I’m sure the residents are not used to what our crews are accustomed to,” he said.

“It would have been a very significant event for them and obviously getting woken at 1:30 in the morning and told you have to move out of your home can be challenging.”

Cabra Dominican College, which is located between Goodwood Road and Winston Avenue, has also been closed for the day.

In a statement on Facebook, Cabra Principal Helen Riekie said parents should direct children to online teaching portal SEQTA for information from teachers.

There have been overnight water main works on Cross Road since February 6, according to Traffic SA, with the roadworks expected to conclude on March 6.
