The company announced the closure today, saying the O’Sullivan Beach factory – which has been running for 30 years – would not survive the closure of Toyota and Holden manufacturing in Australia in October.

In a statement, Tenneco said it had been “actively seeking diversification opportunities for the plant, but has been unable to find a sustainable solution”.

“We sincerely regret the impact of this decision on our Walker employees and their families,” said the plant manager, Gavin Pelling.

“We are extremely proud of our 30 year manufacturing history in O’Sullivan Beach and of our employees’ commitment to continuing to supply our customers with the highest quality exhaust systems until vehicle production ends.”

Tenneco said it did not expect to lay off staff ahead of the October shutdown. The company was “working with affected employees and State and Federal governments to assist with employment transition plans”.

Tenneco’s Monroe plant in Clovelly Park, SA, and its Monroe springs plant in Alexandria, NSW, would continue to operate.

Walker supplied parts to Toyota and Holden who will both cease production in Australia in October.

Holden’s Elizabeth plant will close on October 20.
