How retrofitting buildings can help cut emissions

A year after her staff moved into the refurbished DEWNR headquarters on Waymouth Street, department CEO Sandy Pitcher reflects on how the building can set an example to help Adelaide meet its carbon neutrality goals.

The former ATO building, which has been retrofitted into a 10,000sqm office for upwards of 900 staff, became Australia’s first office to be awarded the 6 Star Green Star – Interiors V1 rating.

Pitcher says that achieving this 6 Star rating takes more than just making the building “green”.

“You have to be living, breathing and working in the building before you are awarded the 6 star – it relies on how people use the building. Such as using the stairs instead of the lift,” she says.

“We had to think differently right from the start, such as sourcing things locally, rather there being miles of transportation.”

Listen to the podcast for more on the building and how Pitcher estimates the transformation will save the Government $30 million over the 12-year lease.
