The 19-year-old, who was a contestant on the Channel Seven reality show last year, died after crashing into a tree near Burra, in SA’s mid-north, yesterday.

He had performed at the music festival earlier that day and was due to perform at the Tea Tree Gully Hotel that night.

Police said O’Brien was the sole occupant of the car that crashed.

Australian singer Natalie Bassingthwaighte, who was O’Brien’s mentor on the reality singing show, tweeted a tribute to the budding artist.

“My heart goes out to Nathaniel O’Brien’s family after hearing of his tragic passing. What a spectacular young man with the voice of an angel,” she wrote.
