Development of a Creatively Driven Film Production Social Enterprise

Jon Staley, Manager/Producer of Youthworx (Victoria), will be presenting a public lecture at The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre, discussing the development of Youthworx. He will also explore the key principles that have created an engaging teaching and learning space, a viable professional film production business and a scalable model.

Youthworx is a unique social enterprise that has developed a ‘long term’ infra-structure to train and employ highly marginalised (homeless or at risk of homelessness) young people in creative and commercial film production. The organisation employs graduates of the training and delivers professional media services to a broad range of clients.

Jon has been involved in the establishment of Youthworx from its conception. He took the idea of using creative media to engage highly marginalised young people and built a sustainable social enterprise model.

He came to the organisation with a background in education, theatre and film and has a longstanding passion and commitment to working with marginalised youth on creative arts and media based projects.

Jon believes that Youthworx “aims to work from the top of the Maslow hierarchy of needs, contending that while food and shelter are a physical necessity, constructive creativity is vital to the broader human experience and can provide the fuel that brings meaning to the daily act of survival.”

He also recognises that Youthworx is highly valuable as it “increases the capacity of young people to lead creatively rich, connected lives where they can reach their full potential.”
