Up to 38 homes and 125 other buildings have been destroyed or badly damaged by an out-of-control bushfire still burning in the Adelaide Hills.

Premier Jay Weatherill on Tuesday confirmed an initial assessment of the 59 sectors affected by the massive fire had been completed.

Four businesses have also been destroyed or badly damaged, taking the total number of buildings damaged or destroyed to 167.

The town of Kersbrook in the Adelaide Hills was the worst affected with 12 homes destroyed or badly damaged.

Weatherill said 23 people had been hospitalised due to the fire, of which 21 had been discharged.

One man remains in a serious condition in hospital where he is being treated for injuries sustained by a falling tree.

The fire, which began at Sampson Flat on Friday, has so far burnt more than 12,000 hectares of land.
