International praise for ‘elegant’ Adelaide Oval

Nov 20, 2014

The Adelaide Oval redevelopment has received international praise from the Institution of Structural Engineers in London, winning an award for excellence in structural design.

The judges expressed admiration for the engineering designers’ response to several difficulties and challenges the project faced. They also praised the way they integrated new and existing elements of the Oval, describing the development as “elegant, lightweight, highly efficient and coherent”.

Adelaide Oval was selected for the award over other internationally acclaimed developments such as the Melbourne Star Observation Wheel, The Wilhelma Zoo in Stuttgart and the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in the UAE.

General manager of the oval’s Stadium Managment Authority Darren Chandler said the accolade reaffirmed the development as a world leader in design.

“The structure is unique to Adelaide and has created enormous interest for every spectator and visitor to the venue since the redevelopment,” Chandler told InDaily.

“It certainly sets the stadium apart from other venues and is the key feature of the Adelaide Oval. It is the image that will be seen by millions across the globe.”

The Institution of Structural Engineers in London is the world’s largest membership-based organisation dedicated to the art and science of structural engineering, with more than 27,000 members across 105 countries.

The awards, which were established in 1968, saw 85 projects from 22 different countries submitted for consideration this year. Adelaide Oval was awarded in the Sports and Leisure Structure category.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan praised the Oval’s structural design and the effect it had had on the city.

“The State Government’s investment in the Adelaide Oval redevelopment has been returned in spades already this year,” Mullighan said.

“The redevelopment has energised the CBD and lays the foundation for increased attention to be focused on the Riverbank Precinct… I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the construction and design.”
