WATCH: SA filmmaker’s R U OK? Day video

Sep 11, 2014

Today is national R U OK? Day – dedicated to connecting people for the prevention of suicide – and it has inspired a song and short film by local musician and cinematographer Bayley Broome-Peake.

The film, We All Fall, is the result of $4000 funding provided to a group of Flinders Film School Graduates from the Helpmann Academy Short Film Project.

After following the work of R U OK? a not-for-profit organisation which encourages people to reach out to others who may be struggling with life by simply asking “Are you ok?”, Broome-Peake was inspired to make her short film .

“With the funding from the Helpmann Academy I wanted to make a video with a social message about uniting people and awareness of suicide prevention,” says Broome-Peake.

“I started with the song – We All Fall – which I wrote myself and then tried to find the right front man who had the confidence to pull it off. I chose a friend of mine, Chris Gunn, who has done a lot of busking.”

Mentored by Dr Tom Young, Flinders University’s video producer, Broome-Peake set to work on the project with her small team.

“Emma McGavisk was the producer and helped organise the shoot and location and Tom Wrobelwski was the audio person who was integral to the success of the film as it was all recorded on location.”

Broome-Peake called in fellow Australian Army Band Adelaide musicians, Stuart Fong (trumpet), Aaron Austin (drummer) and a team of extras to create the music clip. Bayley is a percussionist and drummer with the Australian Army Band.

“The project took a few months of preparation, but then was shot it in one day. The weather was perfect on the day, but we had no idea how it was going to cut together. It was a big experiment for us.”

During the filming Broome-Peak approached R U OK? to ask if they would like to use the film for their campaign.

“They were really thrilled and insisted that I became a community ambassador.

“As well as performing the song live in Victoria Square last week, my role as community ambassador involves asking the question and engaging people with R U OK? Day.

“R U OK? is a simple question and it’s something we don’t ask people very often.

“The number of suicides each year is more than double the road toll. We need to do more about it.”
