St Peter’s Cathedral and St John’s church have been fitted with new external lights to illuminate the buildings in time for Easter.

Adelaide City Council funded the $25,000 installation of new northern external lights for St Peter’s Cathedral.

The council also contributed around $20,000 of the $45,000 lighting upgrade at St John’s Church.

Councilor Sandy Wilkinson successfully proposed that Adelaide City Council contribute to lighting for St Peter’s Cathedral in 2009.

“I’ve been badgering the administration for five years trying to get it to happen,” he said. “Last year we finally created a public lighting budget and funded it out of that.”

Wilkinson told InDaily that he attended an Anglican school but had no other connections with St Peter’s Cathedral.

He said the lighting was necessary to show off the back of the cathedral and improve the evening views from O’Connell Street.
