Flinders University will celebrate the success of the State’s most innovative regional educators as a sponsor of the Education category of the 2014 South Australian Regional Awards.

The Flinders University Education Award aims to recognise the achievements of exemplary educators and trainers, including teachers, schools, registered training providers, universities, community groups and individuals.

Proudly sponsored by the University since 2012, the award acknowledges the contributions of innovative educational programs and providers to enhance learning, student wellbeing, local communities and regional opportunities and impact.

Flinders Professor John Halsey, Sidney Myer Chair in Rural Education and Communities, said the awards provide a “diverse and visible platform” to profile the University’s high level of engagement in issues, affairs and projects across country South Australia.

“Outside the metropolitan area, Flinders has a diverse and vital footprint in terms of individuals and the productivity of small and not so small communities,” Professor Halsey, who is on the judging panel, said.

“Sponsoring the awards is congruent with the fact the University has a strong involvement in rural and regional affairs, including issues not only in education but in healthcare, food production, water resources and sustainability,” he said.

“The newly-elected State Government has designated a Minister for Regional Development, therefore the awards align with the Government’s own objectives as much as they complement the work of Flinders in the regions.”

Professor Halsey said the awards are not just a platform for motivation and information but a practical, hands-on way of promoting participation and excellence in education at all levels, from the grassroots community level through to tertiary institutions.

Now in its 15th year, the South Australian Regional Awards aim to celebrate and showcase the significant contributions of individuals, groups and organisations to regional South Australia across 13 different categories.

The program provides a benchmark for excellence by publicly recognising the achievements and success of those who make a difference in the state’s seven regions.

As a sponsor of the Education category, Flinders University will take part in the selection process and presentation of the awards at seven ceremonies around the State in October.

“We’re also thankful to have our sponsors and partners on board once again, because without them we wouldn’t have the wonderful events and program to celebrate such
great achievements.”
