Leigh Street to stay closed

Sep 25, 2013

Leigh Street will be permanently closed to traffic following an Adelaide City Council vote last night.

The street, which has been at the centre of the State Government’s vibrant city agenda (even with its own Facebook page), has been subject to a trial closure since July last year.

The council’s decision followed a four-week public consultation with 92 per cent of the more than 400 respondents in favour of maintaining the closure.

Just four per cent of people wanted the street to return to its pre-trial condition with some concerns about lack of vehicle access for businesses.

A council spokesperson said the trial’s positives highlighted by respondents included the improvement to pedestrian and cycling experiences as well as increased opportunities for outdoor dining and food vans.

Leigh Street is part of the State Government’s plan to rejuvenate laneways leading from Adelaide Oval to the Central Market.
