NAIDOC Award for Daryle Rigney

Associate Professor Daryle Rigney, Dean of Indigenous Strategy and Engagement at Flinders, has been named Person of the Year in the recent SA National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) awards.A Ngarrindjeri man, Associate Professor Rigney’s long term work with community has developed fruitful relationships between government, universities, business and Indigenous nations, both locally and internationally, on matters of mutual benefit, including building capacity for cross cultural collaboration.

Search tool for Aboriginal health research

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health literature is now easier to find following the launch of a search filter developed by researchers from Flinders University.
Funded by the Lowitja Institute, the product, called LIt.search, provides easy access to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health literature in PubMed, a freely accessible leading health database from the US National Library of Medicine. Based on research led by Associate Professor Jennifer Tieman and Dr Ruth Sladek from Flinders Filters, LIt.search features 27 topic searches of importance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health.

Seminar series on population matters

Flinders University’s Applied Population Studies Program, based in the School of the Environment, and the Australian Population Association (APA), will host Population Matters, a program of seminars and a panel discussion on key aspects of Australia’s population dynamics at Flinders University Victoria Square.
The series begins this Wednesday (July 24) with an overview of South Australia’s demography, including past trends and future prospects, by Professor Graeme Hugo, director of the Australian Population and Migration Research Centre at the University of Adelaide.
The second seminar on September 10, presented by Professor Peter McDonald, president of the International Union for Scientific Study of Population, will explore Australian migration and the impact of changing government policies.

Topics for Conversation

Two Flinders academics have written feature articles in The Conversation: palaeontologist Professor John Long wrote on the sexual habits of dinosaurs and Dr Christine Nicholls from Australian Studies wrote on the relevance of   Australian Rules football to understanding Indigenous spatial sense.
