51 Aus projects on World Architecture Festival shortlist

The World Architecture Festival’s 2013 shortlist was recently announced, featuring 51 Australian projects by 34 architecture firms.

More than 300 projects have been listed worldwide.

The festival aims to share architectural excellence from across the globe and is the largest event and live awards program for the international architecture community.

It acts as a meeting point for all those who are architecturally savvy, including clients, suppliers and, of course, the architects themselves.

Each shortlisted architect will present their entry and will be judged from October 2-4 during this year’s event at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands, designed by Moshe Safdie.

A few of our shortlist favourites:

Point King2 for WebPoint King for Web

Point King Residence, HASSELL, Australia

HASSELL is an international design practice with 14 studios in Australia, China, South-East Asia and the United Kingdom. This year it has been shortlisted for its Point King Residence.

The property’s clifftop location at Portsea, on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, incorporates timber and limestone features.

Nestled into a sloping block, this property sits almost two metres below ground level, thus blending in with its natural surroundings, and is somewhat hidden from view from different angles in Portsea.

The W Guangzhou Hotel and Residence complex was designed in 2006 by Rocco Architects.

Located in the new CBD of Guangzhou, China, it combines elements of both luxury for guests and practicality for residents.

This complex features transparent glazed boxes creating a light feature for the city at night time that can be seen in neighbouring suburbs.

Park for web

Eastside City Park, Patel Taylor, United Kingdom

Birmingham’s first new park for more than a century has been designed by Patel Taylor, and connects the old and new inner-city centre. It combines steel and concrete with plantings as a counter-balance.

This urban landscape design features a near-200m-long water feature with plenty of facilities to accommodate the public.
