How you can help conduct the ASO

Members of the public are being offered the chance to help “conduct” the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in the Australian premiere performance of a symphony by local composer and saxophonist Adam Page.

Anyone aged “from six to 99” is invited to enter a competition to win one of five sub-conductor roles for the June 17 concert at the ASO’s Grainger Studio in Hindley Street, with “no musical experience or training necessary”.

Those selected will sit within the  string, woodwind, brass and percussion sections of the orchestra and guide a movement of Page’s symphony, MOMENTVM, by holding up large numbered cards that correlate with various sections of music (see how it works in the video clip below, featuring the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra).

The show, Tomorrow’s Orchestra Today, is the second in the ASO’s new Gigs at Grainger series, which seeks to present the orchestra in a different way, melding classical music with contemporary styles and technology.

As well as MOMENTVM, the June 17 concert – conducted by Hamish McKeich – will   also see Page performing a loop solo on multiple instruments, a loop duo by Page and violinist Julian Ferraretto, a collection of new works commissioned by the ASO, plus free improvisation by orchestra members.

“Expect to witness the ASO in a different light,” says Page, a multi-instrumentalist who is known for his innovation and quirky style.

“While a lot of my pieces are written in a largely traditional way, the use of looping technology, repetition and improvisation adds another layer to the sound we are commonly used to. As I prefer to write ‘beautiful music’ in an orchestral sense, I hope that the audience will leave feeling lighter and inspired to give a stranger a hug!”

The sub-conductor competition closes at 9am on June 6, and you can enter via the ASO website.
