Railway Tracks is an initiative organised by musician Peter Fernee, from Renewal SA, to support Adelaide’s live music scene by showcasing local artists.

“We want to support local live music in Adelaide by inviting artists to come down and play for a couple of hours to promote themselves,” he says.

“They can sell their CDs and promote their shows to the commuters who are passing through.”

With support from Music SA, Railway Tracks’ music roster has more than 60 artists willing to perform.

“We’re always open to new artists who want to be part of the roster. As long as they’ve got public liability insurance, we’re happy,” Fernee says.

Musician Andy Salvanos, who can often be seen playing the Chapman Stick in Rundle Mall, has become a regular Railway Tracks performer and says he is always looking for new and unusual places to perform.

“The sound is amazing,” he says.

“There is a fair bit of ‘natural’ reverb, which makes the sound just linger. I think it’s ideal for more ambient music.”

The Railway Tracks stage is not restricted to musicians.

“We’ve had a variety of different artists,” Fernee says. “During the Fringe we had acrobats, cabaret acts and all kinds of different performers on stage to promote their shows.”

The next few months will see acts from the upcoming Cabaret Fringe and the Adelaide Guitar Festival giving free performances at the station.

While Fernee cannot reveal who these acts will be, he does have high hopes of other high-profile people entertaining the crowds.

“We’re trying to get the Lord Mayor to do a spot because we’ve heard he plays the guitar,” he says.

Alongside Music SA, the Adelaide City Council’s Live Music Action Plan also supports the program, along with Adelaide Casino, the Adelaide Railway Station and the Riverbank Authority of Renewal SA.

An artist will perform on the Railway Tracks stage at the Adelaide Railway Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 4pm, and from 11.30am every Tuesday and Thursday.

Details of who is performing each day can be found on the Railway Tracks Facebook page.
