A Covid Time

I. Linear Park

As afternoon sun casts its warmth over the veranda
we sit together, thankful for our good fortune
those years ago
in finding this piece of Paradise.
Along the riverside path
children of all ages ride bicycles and scooters,
couples stroll pushing prams and chatting to their young ones,
the elderly hold hands remembering their youth;
both young and old take in the beauty and peace of nature,
only broken by the squawk of sweeping cockatoo,
laughter of perching kookaburra,
song of small coloured rosella or parakeet
swirling and dipping to treetop and grass.
Nature and nurture are at work
for a return.

II. A New World

A new direction must prevail.
Our world has put us on notice: step back.
The black gold that has ruled
and pitted country against country
must be kept in check.
Millions of jaded people scurrying here and there
like ants before the rain
continuously seeking new and exciting places
only to have to find another
in a never-ending cycle of movement,
must let the earth rest and breathe.

Lesley Foster lives in Adelaide overlooking the Torrens Linear Park. She is a retired legal personal assistant, a mother and grandmother. Like so many, she has been under enforced coronavirus house arrest, but at least a novel has become a work-in-progress as a result.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems of up to 40 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to [email protected]. Submissions should be in the body of the email, not as attachments. A poetry book will be awarded to each accepted contributor.
