The Poet

The poet writes alone
waiting for that last line –
allowing it to simply come.

Some revere the poet
while others mock.
Is that because those who mock
don’t like to wait – or think?

When the poet’s pen speaks
it speaks more to the heart
than the mind
for the pen is the heart of the poet.

Who hears the poet?
Who reads the poem?
Who feels the poet
in the throes of such truth?

Those who mock, live unlike the poet
by forcing that last line
by force of their will
for fear of missing out.

And so the poet continues to write alone
calmly waiting for that last line
in joyful certainty of its imminent arrival
thus completing a life’s work.

The poet’s patience and temerity
are inspiring –
don’t you think?

Christine Ivins lives and writes her poetry and short stories in the Batemans Bay region of the New South Wales South Coast. Getting her writing inspiration from observing people and nature, she has worked in both aged and disability care, and an Alpaca breeding business. Her poem today is her first published work.
