The promise of spring is the inspiration for this week’s Poet’s Corner contribution from Martha Landman.

Adelaide Spring

Untamed beauty spills over everything
a drunken palaver of gardenia wafts and rose petal perfume
dazzles the mind, paralyses the senses.
Where did all these sudden leaves come from?
A melodrama of white and lilac buds along the street.

Goshawks, ravens, magpies, kites, all acrobats,
swoop and screech against the immensity of blue sky
as if they want to tear strips out of it.
Red, purple and green-chested lorikeets,
rejoice! rejoice! Their little lungs tremble.

It hurts, all this beauty, it’s uncontainable, obscene
so much bursting! Not a day to be pensive or meditate.
The rain holds off for a few days and the towels
dance like escaped prisoners on the line.
But alas! Don’t think winter is done yet.

Martha Landman moved from Townsville to Adelaide in December 2015. After living here for three years, she is still fascinated by Adelaide’s weather and its trams. She is a member of Friendly Street Poets and her poems have appeared in various journals and anthologies in Australia, the UK and US. As a practising psychologist, she says her poems are inspired by people and nature. Martha’s Adelaide tram poems for InDaily Poet’s Corner can be found here and here, and her poem about winter is here.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems of up to 40 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to [email protected]. Submissions should be in the body of the email, not as attachments. A poetry book will be awarded to each accepted contributor.
