Fringe laughs with Matt Okine

Shhh … don’t tell Ja Rule! Matt Okine, host of Triple J breakfast and TV’s How Not to Behave, tells what to expect from his Fringe show and gives us a mini rap on Adelaide.

Mar 02, 2016, updated Mar 02, 2016

What topics or themes will you be tackling in your 2016 Adelaide Fringe show?

A whole bunch of things! Missing money tins, upsidedown chicken burgers, and ruining sexy moments by doing a Ja Rule impersonation.

Who is it most like to crack up / offend?

Probably Ja Rule. But I don’t think he was planning on coming along, so maybe don’t tell him if you see him. Snitches get stitches. If I end up in a gangsta rap feud because you guys dobbed on me, there’s gonna be trouble.

You began your comedy career at just 18 – what made you realise you could make money from making people laugh?

Make money? Get off the drugs! For the first seven years of my career I was heaps broke. I woulda made more dosh being one of those people who pretends they’re a statue in Rundle Mall.

What’s the best (worst?) heckle you’ve ever had while performing stand-up?

My biggest heckler is a guy called @ratgiles. He trolls my instagram by commenting under my photos telling me how bald I’m going. I’ve kinda grown to respect him… Don’t let him know that, though. I don’t wanna give him a big head. Lord knows he has enough hair to fill it.

You’re a pretty slick amateur rapper, too – any chance you could come up with some lyrics for a short rap on Adelaide?

Adelaide!
My show’s gonna go off like a cavalcade of rattlesnakes,
Don’t tell Ja Rule or else he’ll open up the battle gates…

Matt Okine won the 2015 ARIA award for Best Comedy Release, as will as being nominated for Best Comedy Performer at the 2015 Helpmann Awards. He will be presenting his Adelaide Fringe show at Palace Nova – Cinema 9 from March 8-13.
