SummerSalt Music Festival

Angus & Julia Stone, Meg Mac, Didirri, Ollie English and Seaside will perform at Glenelg Beach this Saturday for SummerSalt Music Festival. The festival is headlined by indie-folk duo and siblings Angus & Julia Stone, whose most recent album, Snow, sold more than half a million copies in Australia alone. Food and drink will be available on site (strictly no BYO). Gates open at 2pm. Tickets available here.

Cinema under the stars

Adelaide’s outdoor cinema season will get in full swing this weekend, with Moonlight Cinema kicking off tomorrow night at Botanic Park and American Express Openair Cinema continuing its programming at the Riverbank. Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick star in Moonlight’s opening night film A Simple Favour – a mystery-thriller about a mother who discovers her best friend has vanished. Also screening this week at Moonlight are Venom (Sunday), The Girl in the Spider’s Web (Tuesday – read InDaily’s review here) and Boy Erased (Wednesday – review here). Gates open at 7pm, with films starting at sundown. Openair Cinema runs until next Friday, with Bohemian Rhapsody screening tonight and Sunday, and A Star is Born on Saturday. Gates open at 6pm, films start at 8pm.

First Fridays at the gallery

The Art Gallery of SA’s monthly Friday evening event tonight will focus on the reopening of the historic Elder Wing with a new hang Australian art. New and treasured pieces from the gallery’s collection now adorn the wing’s freshly painted walls, including works that haven’t been shown previously such as Rayner Hoff’s The Birth of Pegasus sculpture, Ethel Carrick Fox’s circa-1910 painting Sur la plage (on the beach), and Adelaide-born artist Bessie Davidson’s travel paintbox (read more in this InDaily story). Curators Tracey Lock and Elle Freak will give an introduction to the collection at 6pm. Visitors are also invited to take a guided tour of Tarnanthi exhibition, John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new, at 5pm and 7pm. Singer-songwriter Nathan May will perform in the Sculpture Courtyard at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

Messiah

British conductor Christian Curnyn will lead a quartet of Australian soloists and the Adelaide Chamber Singers for this special concert at Elder Hall tonight and tomorrow night. Presented by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Messiah features soprano Sara Macliver, mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell, tenor Henry Coo and bass Morgan Pearse performing Handel’s famous oratorio. “Handel’s music brings a disparate collection of Bible verses together into one of the greatest stories ever told … Come along and hear the angels sing!” urges the ASO. 

Adelaide Central School of Art graduate exhibition

Graduates from the Adelaide Central School of Art’s Bachelor degrees will exhibit almost 200 works at the Glenside campus from tomorrow. Program organisers say the exhibition gives audiences a chance to view emerging trends in contemporary art, with most works up for sale. It features work in a range of media – from painting to installation, collage to sculpture – exploring themes including nostalgia, sense of place, the natural environment, mental health, cultural heritage, gender identity and fantasy. The graduate exhibition runs until December 21.

Dan Sultan

Singer-songwriter Dan Sultan is on the road for a short run of solo shows which will see him play a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh next Friday (December 14). Sultan’s latest release is Killer Under a Blood Moon, but The Gov says he will be playing tunes from all his albums, “as well as a few new surprises”. There will  be two sets, starting at 9.20pm and 10.20pm.
