The Art Gallery of SA’s monthly Friday evening event tonight will focus on the reopening of the historic Elder Wing with a new hang Australian art. New and treasured pieces from the gallery’s collection now adorn the wing’s freshly painted walls, including works that haven’t been shown previously such as Rayner Hoff’s The Birth of Pegasus sculpture, Ethel Carrick Fox’s circa-1910 painting Sur la plage (on the beach), and Adelaide-born artist Bessie Davidson’s travel paintbox (read more in this InDaily story). It features work in a range of media – from painting to installation, collage to sculpture – exploring themes including nostalgia, sense of place, the natural environment, mental health, cultural heritage, gender identity and fantasy.
