Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Priscilla Queen of the Desert will bring the razzle-dazzle to the Festival Theatre for Sunday’s opening night. Based on the iconic 1994 Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, this musical adaptation by Michael Cassel Group and Nullarbor Productions tells the story of three friends who travel across outback Australia to perform a drag show in Alice Springs. Actor Robert Grubb describes the musical adaptation as having a “real rat-baggery” feel that stays true to film director Stephan Elliott’s original plot in this InDaily story. Xavier Rudd

Folk-rock singer and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd will perform at the Thebarton Theatre on Saturday to celebrate the launch of his ninth studio album, Storm Boy. The album traverses themes such as the environment, veganism, spirituality and surfing. Saturday’s performance will feature a selection of music from Storm Boy and Rudd’s back catalogue.

The Man from Earth

Red Phoenix Theatre is currently presenting Jerome Bixby’s stage adaptation of cult sci-fi film The Man from Earth at Holden Street Theatres. The play tells the story of a history professor called John Oldman, who claims he is 14,000-years-old. A gathering of Oldman’s friends and academics endeavour to dismantle his story, but they struggle to prove or deny the claim. Matinee and evening performances run until next Saturday.

Nine-piece band The Bamboos will celebrate the release of their eighth studio album, Night Time People, at their Saturday night gig at The Governor Hindmarsh Hotel. Led by guitarist Lance Ferguson, the band has developed a global reputation for blending the heavy horn sounds of early soul-funk with modern lyrics. On Thursday, emerging Tasmanian punk rock band Luca Brasi will perform on stage. The band will share their new album Stay, featuring hit song “Clothes I Slept in”. The band is known for their meandering guitar lines, self-examining lyrical content and modern take on the punk rock genre.

Mozart at Elder 3

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will honour Australian composer Frederkick Septimus Kelly at Elder Hall next Wednesday, when it performs Kelly’s Elegy for string orchestra: In memoriam Rupert Brooke, which Kelly composed after his friend Brooke was killed on his way to fight at Gallipoli during World War One. The orchestra, led by director and violinist Natsuko Yoshimoto, will also perform Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night and Mozart’s Symphony No. 4. Tickets available here.

SALA Festival

Take your four-legged friend on a dog-friendly walking trail exploring vibrantly-coloured dog water bowls scattered across the city and North Adelaide as part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. Other festival highlights include Afghan refugee Muzafar Ali‘s photography exhibition exploring life in war-torn Afghanistan at Ginger’s Coffee Studio in Goodwood and Hannah Vorrath-Pajak’s plant and fungi-inspired ceramics at the Adelaide Botanic Garden’s North Lodge. The SALA program showcases painting, sculpture, video, multi-media, photography and more in more than 700 shows and events across Adelaide and regional SA. The festival finishes at the end of this month.
