What’s on: summer sounds, cinema under the stars

The Cat Empire & Xavier Rudd – Glenelg Beach

Genre-bending party band The Cat Empire, whose 2016 album Rising with the Sun debuted at No. 1 on the ARIA charts, have joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd for a series of open-air concerts across the country. Their Adelaide performance at Glenelg Beach on Saturday (February 11) will be opened by HARTS, Ocean Alley and Sahara Beck. Gates open at 3pm and tickets are still available.

Music at Fork by Fork-West – Torrensville

Fringe favourites the Wheatsheaf Ukulele Collective are taking a break from the festival this year, but you can catch them performing a small gig at Fork by Fork-West on Saturday. The event, from 5pm until 8pm at Kings Reserve, will also include performances by Todd Sibbin and The Arcadian Driftwood, Conchillia, and Aaron Thomas, more than 30 food trucks, kids’ activities and a classic car display.

Roy Orbison Reborn – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Roy-Orbison-Reborn This two-hour concert will see Australian singer Dean Bourne perform Roy Orbison hits such as “Pretty Woman”, “Crying”, “Danny Boy” and “Only the Lonely”. The performance – on Saturday night at Her Majesty’s Theatre – will also showcase songs by The Traveling Wilburys, of which Orbison was a member.

Outdoor Cinema – Mount Barker

The Wallis Outdoor Cinema on the lawns of Auchendarroch House at Mount Barker will serve up a spoonful of sugar with the 1960s classic Mary Poppins tonight (Friday), before spicing things up with the 15+ new-release Fifty Shades Darker on Saturday. Sessions are run each weekend throughout summer, with gates open at 7.30pm. There will also be a special screening of Fifty Shades Darker on Valentine’s Day.

RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider. ASO’s Rhapsody & Symphony – Town Hall

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s first concert of 2017 in its Great Classics series will be conducted by Nicholas Carter and feature pianist Simon Tedeschi tomorrow (Saturday) at the Adelaide Town Hall. The program comprises Gershwin’s jazz-infused Rhapsody in Blue, Berlioz’s Le Corsaire and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No 2.

Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

The James Franco comedy Why HIm? (Friday), animated family film Moana (Saturday) and the wartime thriller Allied (Sunday) are screening at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park this weekend. Other upcoming screenings include La La Land (Tuesday), Hidden Figures (Wednesday) and Dirty Dancing (Thursday). Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown. Full program here.

Fleurieu Film Festival

Fleurieu-Film-Fest McLaren Vale is hosting two evenings of cinema under the stars this weekend during the Fleurieu Film Festival. Saturday will see a free outdoor screening of the Scott Hicks film The Boys are Back at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitors & Information Centre, with pre-movie entertainment, plus food and wine available. And on Sunday the festival awards presentation will be held at Serafino Winery, with a screening of the 10 finalist short films. Details here.

Courtyard Concert – Rockford Wines

SA singer-songwriter Kate Fuller and her five-piece band The Daffodils – featuring Adam Page and Julian Ferraretto – will present a night of folk classics and original music at Rockford Wines’ Courtyard Concert Series on Saturday. They will be joined by alt-country/folk singer Sam Brittain and celtic fiddle player Meg LaGrande for the outdoor event, which begins at 6.30pm at the Barossa Valley winery and includes supper and a glass of wine.

My Friend Miss Flint – Arts Theatre

The Therry Dramatic Society opens its 2017 season with the comedy My Friend Miss Flint, set in the 1980s and revolving around a tricky situation that arises from an attempted tax dodge. Performances (including Saturday matinees) are at the Arts Theatre until February 18.

Fringe at Bakehouse

Fringe is beginning early at Bakehouse Theatre, with three shows from Hong Kong opening on Monday: theatre work Smoking with Grandma, about refugees in a remote village in China; music piece Never Seen, featuring violin, live electronics and storytelling; and dance work Galaxy Dreamer. The G’Day Hong Kong program also includes a free art exhibition.

Adelaide Fringe

All lit up – Elder Hall.

The 2017 Adelaide Fringe kicks off next weekend, with more than 1500 artists and 80 floats taking part in a “mythical night parade” along North Terrace from 8.30pm on Saturday, February 18. There will be free pre-parade entertainment, and buildings along North Terrace will be transformed with lights, animations and interactive projections as part of Digital Walls, from February 17-19. This year’s Fringe will run until March 19 and includes more than 1200 shows, events, exhibitions and experiences. Get more of a taste of what’s in store here.

Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition – Drill Hall

More than 100 works – including ceramics, jewellery, video, photography, sculpture and painting – will be on display from February 17 until March 12 in the Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition at the Drill Hall, Torrens Parade Ground. The exhibition showcases the talents of students from Adelaide College of the Arts (TAFE SA) / Flinders University, and the School of Art, Architecture and Design (UniSA), with a VIP Vernissage (preview) on February 15 (bookings essential). Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition – State Library

Ninety stunning photos are on display in this exhibition showcasing winners and finalists from the 2016 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism. They range from harrowing images of war to those capturing triumphant moments in sport and the beauty of artistic achievement.
