Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures Exhibition

Sculptures made of metal, wood, ceramic, glass and even old gumboots are on display along the Esplanade at Brighton in this annual exhibition which opened yesterday and continues until February 5. More than 100 sculptors from Adelaide and interstate have contributed works this year, with more delicate pieces being shown in the Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubrooms and an adjacent tent. Crush music and art – Adelaide Hills

Food and wine may be the main game, but this weekend’s Crush Festival also features events including live music, art, theatre and film. They include a performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing at Deviation Road Winery tonight, Cinema Under the Stars at Barrister Block Wines, a street-art battle and DJs at Longview Vineyard’s The Piece Project, singer-songwriter Taasha Coates (The Audreys) at Robert Johnson Vineyards, and acoustic vibes at Ngeringa. Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, which scored a best-picture Oscar nomination this week, is screening tonight at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park. Other upcoming screenings include Passengers (Saturday), a sing-a-long session of Grease (Saturday), Manchester by the Sea (Tuesday), Patriot’s Day (Wednesday) and Top Gun  (Thursday). Nick Cave and & Bad Seeds – Entertainment Centre

After the success of their ARIA-chart-topping album Skeleton Tree, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are back touring the country, with a show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday night. Doors open at 7pm and when we last looked, there were still general admission standing and reserved seating tickets available.

Bondi Cigars & No Fixed Address – The Gov

Blues and roots band the Bondi Cigars are back at the Governor Hindmarsh tonight (Friday), while SA Music Hall of Fame inductees No Fixed Address (pictured above) will play a gig on Saturday, with a special guest performance by Indigenous Adelaide group Kineman Karma.

Sappers & Shrapnel – Art Gallery of SA

This weekend is the last chance to see Sappers & Shrapnel, an exhibition inspired by trench art – objects made by soldiers and civilians from the waste of warfare. Sappers & Shrapnel features work from the Australian War Memorial’s collection, as well as new work by contemporary artists including Fiona Hall, Ben Quilty, Sera Waters and the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. It is at the Art Gallery of South Australia until January 29.

Have Violin, Will Travel – Gigs at Grainger

Marking the return this year of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s series of gigs at its Grainger Studio in Hindley Street, Have Violin, Will Travel features jazz violinist Julian Ferraretto and conductor Benjamin Northey. Ferraretto promises to draw on his experience of performing with artists such as Natacha Atlas, Amjad Ali Khan and Eska to take audiences on a “global adventure”. Performances are on February 3 and 4.

Zero Feet Away – Ancient World

Act Now Theatre’s new work, a performance experiment about finding intimacy in a virtual world, is at Ancient World in Hindley Street, with the final show on Saturday. The 16+ Zero Feet Away was created by a team of queer artists, and looks into areas like “hook-up apps and dating apps, nightclubs and bedrooms”. Read more here.

First Fridays: Art Awakening ­– Art Gallery of SA

The gallery’s First Fridays after-hours event next week (February 3) will include guided tours of the exhibition Awakening: Art of Buddhism. There will also be a talk about the art of Buddhism by curator of Asian art James Bennett, performances by musicians Renee Pounsett and Oisima (pictured above), and an open meditation class. Curious Beasts: Animal prints from Dürer to Goya – SA Museum

This exhibition highlights the “beautiful and bizarre” imagery found in animal prints of the 15^th to the early 19^th centuries in the British Museum’s collection, including works by well-known artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya and George Stubbs. Curious Beasts, which also showcases rare items from the South Australian Museum‘s own collection, continues until February 5.

Nikon-Walkley Press Photography Exhibition – State Library

Ninety stunning photos are on display in this exhibition showcasing winners and finalists from the 2016 Nikon-Walkley Awards for Excellence in Photojournalism. They range from harrowing images of war to those capturing triumphant moments in sport and the beauty of artistic achievement. The exhibition will be at the State Library of SA’s Institute Building until February 12. Read more in this InDaily article.
