What’s on: Deep South, Bowerbird & games for grown-ups

From Zkye to Zukerman, this weekend’s entertainment line-up includes a blues and roots music fest at The Gov, a series of ASO concerts, Bowerbird design market, an adult Play Park in the city and a Leonard Cohen tribute show.

Deep South Festival – The Gov

Taking place over three days (November 25-27) at the Governor Hindmarsh, Deep South features a strong line-up of blues, roots and folk musicians, including Zkye, Nikko & Snooks, Chris E Thomas, Kelly Menhennett, The Streamliners, Chris Finnen, The Associates, Phil Manning and Sweet Baby James. Food will be available throughout the festival, with Southern-style platters on Saturday night and a Cajun-style grill on Sunday. See the full line-up here.

Violinist, violist and conductor Pinchas Zukerman is in Adelaide this week for a four-concert series with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at the Town Hall, including performances tonight (Friday) and Saturday night featuring works by Enescu, Beethoven and Brahms, and a Zuckerman and Friends matinee show on Sunday. Zuckerman will also be hosting a master-class on Monday.

Play Park – Hindmarsh Square

This outdoor social event, run in partnership with Splash Adelaide, will feature a range of party games for adults – including giant Jenga, UNO, bocce and a Lego building challenge. Organiser Nate Overbeeke says the aim of the game(s) is to encourage creativity and spontaneity, creating a fun way to meet new people. The licensed, 18+ event will run from 3pm-7pm on Sunday, with Italian street food from Signor Arrosticini, as well as coffee and alcohol. More here.

Spirit Festival Cafe Series – Tandanya

The final show in The Spirit Festival Presents Café Series on Saturday evening at Tandanya Arts Cafe will feature a mix of both emerging and established talent: Vonda Last, Alice Skye, Emily Wurramara, Benny Walker, Gail Page and Corey Theatre. Bowerbird design market – Adelaide Showground

bowerbird-credit-belinda-monck-photography Now in a larger space at the Showgrounds’ Wayville Pavilion, Bowerbird features more than 150 stalls selling homewares, fashion, furniture, artwork, jewellery, stationery and more. There will also be interactive workshops, and an array of food and drink options. The market is open from 4pm-9pm today and from 10am-5pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Extremities – Space Theatre

This psychological thriller sees a woman turn the tables on a stranger who tries to assault her in her own home. Directed by former NIDA teacher Tony Knight, the Adelaide production is supporting White Ribbon Australia’s campaign against domestic violence. Performances of Extremities continue at the Space Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, today and tomorrow.

Leonard Cohen Tribute Night – La Boheme

leonard-cohen-tribute-show-la-boheme Anthony Callisto (Cosmo Thundercat), Koral Chandler (Koral & The Goodbye Horses) and Jennifer Kingwell will perform interpretations of Leonard Cohen’s songs and poetry, interwoven with their original material in what is described as a “homage to the creative spirit” of the singer and poet. The free show will be at La Boheme in Grote Street from 8pm-9.30pm tonight (Friday). Details here.

Sappers & Shrapnel – Art Gallery of SA

This new exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia is inspired by trench art – objects made by soldiers and civilians from the waste of warfare. Sappers & Shrapnel features work from the Australian War Memorial’s collection, as well as new work by contemporary artists including Fiona Hall, Ben Quilty, Sera Waters and the Tjanpi Desert Weavers.
