State Opera’s Tosca – Festival Theatre

Soprano Kate Ladner stars as Floria Tosca in State Opera SA’s production of Puccini’s tragic tale of love, jealousy, betrayal and loss, which opens at the Festival Theatre on Saturday. The show caps off State Opera’s 40^th birthday year, with the company promising that “the incredible church scene” alone will be worth the price of admission. Performances continue on November 15, 17 and 19.

Music in the Square – Victoria Square

South Australian singer Abbey Howlett will headline this free live music event in Victoria Square from 5.30-7.30pm today (Friday). Music in the Square – part of the Adelaide City Council’s Live Music Action Plan – will also feature a bar and food trucks.

Sappers & Shrapnel – Art Gallery of SA

This new exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia is inspired by trench art – objects made by soldiers and civilians from the waste of warfare. Sappers & Shrapnel features work from the Australian War Memorial’s collection, as well as new work by contemporary artists including Fiona Hall, Ben Quilty, Sera Waters and the Tjanpi Desert Weavers. British Film Festival – Palace Nova

The BBC First British Film Festival sees a wide range of new and restored feature films and documentaries screening at Palace Nova cinemas until November 23. This year’s festival has a special focus on the films of director Ken Loach, and also includes a “Local Heroes” retrospective, showcasing 10 films in what is described as a “specially curated ode to some of Britain’s cinematic heroes”. State Theatre’s Tartuffe – Dunstan Playhouse

Funny, clever and inventive, this South Australian production of Molière’s classic tale of the slick conman Tartuffe is a marvellous fusion of old and new, according to InDaily reviewer Greg Elliott. Featuring Nathan O’Keefe as Tartuffe and Paul Blackwell as the nobleman Orgon, it’s being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA and Brink Productions at the Dunstan Playhouse until November 20.

Don Parties On – Holden Street Theatres

Australian playwright David Williamson’s sequel to Don’s Party sees the gang of characters from the original 1971 play reunited for another “raucous” federal election night party 40 years on. Don Parties On is being presented by Red Phoenix Theatre at Holden Street Theatres until November 19.

Kim Wilde & Howard Jones / 1965 Masters Apprentices – The Gov

The Governor Hindmarsh is serving up a dose of ’80s nostalgia on Saturday night, with a double-header show featuring touring pop stars Kim Wilde and Howard Jones. On Sunday night, the hotel will host the “reconstituted” Masters Apprentices, who performed two sold-our Adelaide Fringe shows earlier this year.

Graduate Singers – Elder Hall

How Shall We Sing? is the title of the Graduate Singers’ Saturday night concert in Elder Hall on North Terrace, with the promise of a cross-section of choral music spanning several centuries. The performance will also see the Adelaide choir launch its concert season for 2017, when it will celebrate its 40^th birthday. More details here.

The Dressmaker Costume Exhibition – Ayers House

More than 50 costumes worn by actors including Kate Winslet and Sarah Snook in Australian film The Dressmaker are on display in this exhibition at Ayers House Museum until December 11. The display, developed for the National Trust by award-winning designer Marion Boyce, offers a taste of 1950s Parisian couture. Details here.
