The zombie apocalypse is coming to Adelaide
Two Adelaide friends are transforming an abandoned property in the city’s south to create a zombie apocalypse experience that will take the concept of survival of the fittest to the extreme.
Business development managers Tom Moore and Troy Liston hope the Our Final HourZ simulator – described as a mixture of storyline, scavenging, paintball, maze, cosplay and tactical gameplay – will attract participants from around the state and the country.
Moore says they were inspired by their interest in zombie video games and paintball.
“Social activities like paintball, go-karting and bowling all get slightly boring after a while so we thought it was time for something different,” Moore says.
“We want national customers to come to us and be drawn to Adelaide to experience the apocalypse.”
Our Final HourZ is an advanced laser-tag experience which will give participants the opportunity to become both the hunter and hunted through consecutive rounds of a full-day obstacle course.
The experience will be spread across 6000sqm on a site that has been abandoned for more than a decade, but which Moore and Liston want to keep secret for now. It has three interlinking buildings containing numerous rooms and elevated walkways, with a combination of low lighting, damaged walls and filthy warehouse-like conditions bound to frighten all who enter.
‘The multi-level complex is a mixture between an obstacle course and an escape room, where you have to find clues to know how to get out,” Moore says.
He adds that participants can expect a “terrifyingly thrilling and challenging video game experience brought to life”.
A total of 60 people aged over 16 will be able to participate in the course each day, with 15 people forming each group.
Each individual will experience the roles of a SWAT team member and also a “brain dead” zombie in various rounds.
Costumes for both roles will be produced by Fancy That on Beach Road. While part of the SWAT team, participants will be given tactical, military-inspired uniforms as well as safety gear and realistic heavy-duty quality equipment. The zombie costumes will be far more extreme with ripped and highly stained clothing.
Award-winning Adelaide production designer David Lampard has assisted with visual aspects of the storyline, including the set dressing, outfits for the actors and lighting.
No opening date has yet been set for Final HourZ, with Moore and Liston planning to launch a crowdfunding campaign soon to help fund the set-up of “the compound”.
