What’s on: Guitar Festival, Sound of Music, Angels and more
The city is alive with the sound of strings at the Adelaide Guitar Festival and the Sound of Music at the Festival Theatre this weekend. Other events include a Latin American film fest, gigs by The Angels and Jimmy Barnes, and the SALA festival.

Adelaide Guitar Festival
More than 300 artists are performing as part of the four-day Adelaide Guitar Festival, ranging from 2016 Grammy Award-winning folk duo Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, to jazz improv masters Wolfgang Muthspiel Trio and rockabilly group Cruisin’ Deuces. The Panics will play at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday, performing their soundtrack to the poetic documentary Girt By Sea, and composer Wolfgang Muthspiel will join the Australian String Quartet, festival artistic director Slava Grigoryan and classical guitarist Karin Schaupp for a concert at the Town Hall on Sunday. Also on Sunday, at Her Maj, will be the Australian premiere of a film about guitar legend Paco de Lucía, accompanied by flamenco performances. The festival includes late-night sessions in the Space Theatre, as well as workshops, artist talks and meet-the-maker sessions. Cine Latino Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend
More than 30 films from Latin American countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela are screening during the Cine Latino Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend until August 24. See full program details here.
The Angels + Mi-Sex – The Gov
The Angels’ Hardwired tour brings the rockers to The Governor Hindmarsh tonight (Friday) and tomorrow, with the promise of both new hits and classics such as “Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again”, “Take a Long Line” and “Shadowboxer”. They’ll be joined by special guests Kiwi ’80s band Mi-Sex (“Computer Games”), who reunited after the Christchurch earthquakes and have been recording new material this year.
The Sound of Music – Festival Theatre
The touring London Palladium production of this popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is playing at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide until September 4. Recounting the well-known story of the von Trapp family’s flight across the mountains to escape the Nazis, The Sound of Music features a cast including Cameron Daddo (Captain von Trapp), Marina Prior, Lorraine Bayly and Adelaide-born Johanna Allen. Jimmy Barnes – Entertainment Centre
Barnes and his “soul ensemble” are playing at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre tonight (Friday) as part of a tour celebrating the release of his Soul Searchin’ album. Fans are promised hits from the rocker’s 25-year career, as well as the “songs that inspired him to become a singer in the first place”.
SALA Festival
The month-long South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival features work from more than 4600 artists in 630 free exhibitions state-wide, including flagship shows by Robert Hannaford, Catherine Truman, Fiona Hall, Sue Kneebone and Franz Kempf at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Encompassing all forms of visual art, SALA also includes special events such as pop-up exhibitions in shipping containers in Victoria Square, regional art tours, and art after dark. A Day With Jane – Ayers House
Described as an escape into the world of Jane Austen, A Day With Jane will feature “Austenesque characters”, a concert, readings, high tea and dance lessons. The three-hour program begins at 2pm on Sunday. Details and bookings here.
Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA
Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. Fiona Hall – All the King’s Men – Art Gallery of SA
All the King’s Men is the masterwork from Fiona Hall’s 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition Wrong Way Time. The installation includes 20 sculptures suspended in space that are made from military uniforms, with mask-like heads and ghostly, skeletal bodies. The Matchmaker – Goodwood Institute Theatre
This farce about a New York widow who likes to arrange things – including marriages – is being presented by The Independent Theatre at the Goodwood Institute until August 13. Details here.
The Crucible – Little Theatre
The University of Adelaide Theatre Guild has taken on Arthur Miller’s powerful drama set against the backdrop of the 17th-century Salem witch trials for its latest production. The Crucible is playing at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, Adelaide University until August 20.
Biography: A Game – Bakehouse Theatre
A play about choice and consequences, Biography: A Game sees a middle-aged behavioural researcher given the opportunity to start his life over at any point he chooses. It’s playing at Bakehouse Theatre until August 20.
Emily Loves to Bounce – Patch Theatre
Inspired by three books by author Stephen Michael King, Patch Theatre’s Emily Loves to Bounce features live music, storytelling and “theatre mystery”. Centred on two characters who discover the power of imagination when they step into a world of boxes and balls, it is aimed at children age four to eight, with performances at Norwood’s Odeon Theatre on August 13 and 20.
