Umbrella: Winter City Sounds

This new winter music festival seeks to warm up Adelaide with 260 gigs across the city over three-and-a-half weeks. Presented by Music SA, Umbrella: Winter City Sounds encompasses a smorgasbord of genres – including hip-hop, folk, pop, heavy metal and world music – at spaces ranging from pubs and laneways to the zoo, trams and even the old Z Ward at Glenside Hospital. Umbrella has also teamed up with the Adelaide Guitar Festival to present Guitars in Bars, with dozens of artists performing over four weeks (see the full line-up here).

Australian Dance Theatre’s Ignition – AC Arts

Five emerging and mid-career choreographers showcase their talents in the ADT’s Ignition program, which has returned after a five-year hiatus. Ignition features a 30-minute commissioned work by former ADT dancer and choreographer Lina Limosani, plus four shorter works, including one exploring the dark history of human zoos. Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA

Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever – Botanic Park

A “Wuthering Heights” re-creation in the UK.

Kate Bush fans will gather in Botanic Park tomorrow at 10am to re-create the singer’s music video for “Wuthering Heights” as part of celebrations on The International Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever. Participation is free, but those joining the fun are encouraged to make a donation to the Heart Foundation. They’re also asked to wear a red dress, red stockings and black belt, and “bring your Kate Bush adoration and boundless joy”. More details here.

Undercover Adelaide – Aperitif

This real-world interactive game was a hit during the Adelaide Fringe and now it’s back on July 16, 24 and 30 and August 6 at Aperitif in Grenfell Street. Presented by Fire Hazard, it’s described as a battle of wits where participants have to evade undercover surveillance and carry out a series of missions in the city over two hours. Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition – SA Museum

At the South Australian Museum until July 31, the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition showcases the work of finalists in this year’s competition. The 2016 Open prize was won this year by taxidermy artist Julia deVille, with a sculpture seeking to provoke discussion about the use of factory-farmed eggs in food products.

Alpine Winter Village – Riverbank

The Torrens Parade Ground in the Riverbank Precinct has been transformed into an alpine village setting for the month of July, with ice skating, Christmas markets, live entertainment, winter food and drinks, and more. The Alpine Winter Village has been created by the team behind the Royal Croquet Club, with free entry during the day for families and $5 entry for individuals after 7pm.

Akmal – Dunstan Playhouse

Akmal claims he’s returning to Adelaide “because he owes a lot of money and the debt collectors have promised that if payment isn’t made they will break his legs which he needs to perform stand-up comedy successfully”. The comedian, who competed in reality-TV show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here earlier this year, will perform two shows tonight and tomorrow at the Dunstan Playhouse.

Winter Fork in the Port – Hart’s Mill

Fork on the Road will be back at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide from midday until 9pm on Saturday, with music, kids’ entertainment, food trucks and a bar serving drinks from SA brewers, distillers and winemakers. More information here.

Fleurieu Art Prize exhibition – Samstag Museum

The “richest landscape art prize in the world” has relocated this year from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Samstag Museum of Art in the city, where the work of all 58 finalists is on display until July 29. This year’s prize was won by Indigenous artist Tony Albert with a wall installation made from vintage playing cards. The work of finalists in the Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize are currently being shown at wineries and other venues in McLaren Vale.

Straight White Men – Space Theatre

Described as “a provocative and hilarious faux-sit-com”, this new co-production by the State Theatre Company of SA and La Boite Theatre Company explores big questions about masculinity, success, sacrifice and cultural empowerment. Performances continue at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until July 23. Read InDaily’s story about the show here.

Wicked – Arts Theatre

Matt Byrne Media is presenting Wicked at the Arts Theatre until 16 and Elizabeth’s Shedley Theatre from July 20-30. The award-winning musical – with music by Stephen Schwarz – re-imagines the Wizard of Oz, looking at the unlikely friendship between emerald-skinned Elphaba and her rival Galinda when they meet at Shiz University in Oz. Price Check: The Musical – Bakehouse Theatre

This new musical comedy centres on the dysfunctional lives of five supermarket employees, all on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It’s playing at the Bakehouse Theatre until July 16.
