Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Beginning tonight, this year’s Cabaret Festival will feature more than 425 artists in 150 performances over 16 days. Opening-weekend shows include the ever-popular Variety Gala, New York performer Amy G’s Entershamement (described as “Shirley Bassey meets Jerry Lewis at a roller disco party”), American Broadway and television star Megan Hilty in Concert, musical comedy trio Tripod’s This Gaming Life (with the ASO) and family show The Composer is Dead (comedian Frank Woodley with the ASO). Sea & Vines – McLaren Vale

The McLaren Vale Sea & Vines Festival celebrates the region’s culinary and wine traditions. It features 25 wineries and 35 food and wine events over the long weekend, including degustation dinners, lunches, family fun days, master-classes, live entertainment, food trucks, and a Spanish-inspired fiesta. Tales of a City by the Sea – Bakehouse Theatre

This play exploring the relationship between a Palestinian woman living in a refugee camp in Gaza and an American-born Palestinian doctor and activist is described as “a unique and poetic journey into the lives of ordinary people struggling to find hope and love in areas affected by war and violence”. It’s at the Bakehouse Theatre until June 18.

Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition – SA Museum

Opening today at the South Australian Museum and continuing until July 31, the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition showcases the work of finalists in the open and emerging artist categories of the competition. The 2016 Open prize was won this year by taxidermy artist Julia deVille, with a sculpture seeking to provoke discussion about the use of factory-farmed eggs in food products, while Dan Power took out the Emerging Artist prize for a work featuring drawings of endangered flora and fauna on a bull’s skull.

The Pink Floyd Experience – Thebarton Theatre

This Pink Floyd Experience has been touring since 2004, delivering tribute shows that seek to emulate the music and vibe of a real Pink Floyd show. On their current tour, which lands at the Thebby tonight (June 10), it is re-creating the band’s stadium show The Division Bell Tour, featuring hits including “Another Brick in the Wall” and “Learning to Fly”.

Adelaide Cabaret Fringe

The Cabaret Fringe is serving up a smorgasbord of shows, “ranging from circus to samba, comedy to quizzes, and tributes to titillating tunes”, at venues around Adelaide until June 26. Shows include The Redhead Cabaret (pictured above), A Case of You – The Music of Joni Mitchell, Candy’s Cabaret Live (with Candy Chambers), Cirque Nocturne, Jess McKerlie’s Gender Spanner, Kurt Phelan’s Phelan Groovy!, Marduk Flamenco’s Vidorra, and The Lotus Eaters: A Chamber Cabaret. Fleurieu Art Prize exhibition – Samstag Museum

The “richest landscape art prize in the world” has relocated this year from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Samstag Museum of Art in the city, where the work of all 58 finalists is on display until July 29. This year’s prize was won by Indigenous artist Tony Albert with a wall installation made from vintage playing cards. The work of finalists in the Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize are currently being shown at wineries and other venues in McLaren Vale.

ASO’s Gigs at Grainger 2 – Grainger Studio

Titled Tomorrow’s Orchestra Today, the second of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s series of shows at its Grainger Studio features curator and multi-instrumentalist Adam Page on saxophone and Julian Ferraretto on violin, alongside members of the ASO. The performance – on Friday, June 17 – will feature live looping, improvisation and the Australian premiere of Page’s MOMENTVM Symphony. Details here.

The Sugarcanes – Grace Emily

Rock and soul group The Sugarcanes, currently touring on the back of their self-titled debut album, will play a gig at the Grace Emily on Saturday night, with support by local psychobilly outfit The Villenettes. The Sugarcanes’ nostalgic sound is said to be “deeply rooted by the old-school marquis of soul”. Check it out here on Soundcloud.

The Smith Street Band – The Gov

Melbourne four-piece the Smith Street Band are playing an all-ages gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday as part of their final run of Throw Me in the River live shows. On Sunday The Gov will host old-school rockers Radio Birdman.

Public Image, Private Lives – Art Gallery of SA

Subtitled Family, Friends and Self in Photography, this free exhibition features intimate portraits from the 19^th century to the present by Australian and international artists including Max Dupain and Andy Warhol. They include a heartrending series by Sydney photographer William Yang of a friend with AIDS, and candid images by Carol Jerrems capturing 1970s counterculture. The gallery is also currently showing a collection of works titled Between the Lines: Australian Artists and War.
