The Magic Object-themed 2016 Adelaide Biennial wrapped up on the weekend, with total attendance figures of more than 220,000 – more than double that of the 2014 Biennial, Dark Heart.
Magic Object curator Lisa Slade said the surge in figures could be attributed partly to the fact that in addition to the Art Gallery of South Australia, works were also exhibited at the Anne & Gordon Samstag Museum of Art, JamFactory, Carrick Hill and Santos Museum of Economic Botany.
Art Gallery of SA director Nick Mitzevich said Green’s appointment to curate the 2018 Biennial would build on the partnership established with Samstag Museum and other institutions.
“Erica has a host of commissioned projects and major exhibitions and publications to her credit,” he said.
Thirteen artworks from the 2016 Biennial have been acquired by the Art Gallery of SA to become part of its collection.
Collectively valued at more than $500,000, they include artist Nell’s sculptural installation The Wake, Michael Zavros’s floral-arrangement painting The Phoenix, Abdul-Rahman Abdullah’s life-like self-portrait sculpture Merantau, Robyn Stacey’s camera obscura image Lighthouse Wharf Hotel, and Heather B. Swann’s large installation Banksia Men (which consists of nine dark figures woven from black silk and dotted with glass beads).
