An intimate evening with KickAssReds

Sep 22, 2015

Subtitled “Save the Red, Save the Planet”, #KissAssReds is a punchy, comical and at times risqué new work by South Australian playwright Michèle Saint-Yves.

The three redheaded performers – Saint-Yves, Izzy Jane and Maryann Boettcher – each showcase multiple talents, with a personal touch inherent from the outset and the scene suitably set with thick red velvet curtains that envelope the Rhino Room stage.

Written with clarity, wit and intelligence, Saint-Yves’ script takes the audience on a journey through the history of red-haired women, exploring how they have been immortalised throughout time in story, song and legend.

The well-researched and delightfully executed “play-meets-cabaret” style show is supported by set and costumes by Boettcher, along with original music from singer-songwriter Jane.

Being a natural redhead, I was immediately drawn to #KickAssReds – and I was joined in the audience by several other RANGAs at Sunday’s performance, where we learned the meaning of this acronym, along with many other fascinating tidbits.

The redhead stereotypes are numerous and far reaching: allegedly quick to temper and prone to fits of rage, they have a reputation for being misfits, causing mischief and creating magic. Considered highly sexed and sporting spirits of fire, the flame-haired, pale-skinned recessive-gene minority group are also said to be sensitive to the elements and fiercely connected to the elementals.

The sharing of heartfelt stories adds an extra dimension to the production, providing relatable tales of the joys and woes of being red. The audience is also endowed with a who’s who of famous redheads from the arenas of politics to mythology and everywhere in between.

No matter what has been imposed upon this minority group, the undeniable fact remains that redheads are never short of character and will always stand out in a crowd.

There is much to learn from these sassy and accomplished artists, so if you are one or know one, do yourself a red-haired favour and get along to #KissAssReds this week at the Rhino Room.

#KickAssREDS is performing at the Rhino Room until September 29.
