A gig packed with Neil Young songs, First Fridays at the Art Gallery of SA, an art walk  in the West End and an Adelaide Symphony Orchestra concert showcasing talented young Australian artists and are among this weekend’s picks.

Other options include the State Theatre Company’s production of Betrayal, Sydney Dance Company’s triple bill De Novo, and the launch of the National Trouble Makers Union at Port Adelaide with satirist Bryan Dawe.

Helpless – The Songs of Neil Young

Neil Young fan Tom West will lead a group of Adelaide musicians in this performance tonight of a collection of songs spanning Young’s career. The gig at The Governor Hindmarsh follows the successful premiere of Helpless at the Adelaide Fringe earlier this year. On Saturday night, The Gov is hosting the Caliente Latino Festival, featuring Cuban-style band The Latin Connection, Las Chicas Bomba and salsa floorshows.

Carter Conducts – ASO

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is presenting two concerts at the Town Hall this weekend conducted by Nicholas Carter (recently appointed ASO principal conductor from 2016) and featuring young Australian cellist Li-Wei Qin (right) and soprano Jacqueline Porter. Li-Wei Qin will perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto, which he describes as “hauntingly beautiful”,  with the program also featuring Wagner’s Parsifal Prelude and Mahler’s Symphony No 4. The concerts are at 8pm tonight (Friday) and 6.30pm on Saturday.

West End Art Walk and Pop-Up Market

This multi-venue art experience comprises pop-up exhibitions in unconventional spaces in and around Hindley West which can be explored via an interactive map. Running tonight (Friday) and Saturday from 7pm until 10pm as part of SALA, it also incorporates music and live performance, with the opportunity to watch emerging artists at work. Details here. SALA Festival

More than 5000 artists are exhibiting their work in around 550 venues across the state during the 2015 South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival. Opening this weekend is vibrant group exhibition Colour Me at the Adelaide Town Hall, where local emerging and established artists explore the diversity of colour through myriad mediums. SALA continues until the end of August, and also includes open studios, tours, artist residencies and other events. The full program is online.

Betrayal – State Theatre Company

Harold Pinter’s Betrayal begins after the end of an affair, then proceeds in reverse to reveal how the three central characters – Emma, Robert and Robert’s best friend Jerry – ended up where they are today. With a cast including Alison Bell, Nathan O’Keefe and Mark Saturno, the State Theatre Company of SA is presenting Betrayal at the Dunstan Playhouse until August 15. Read InDaily’s review here.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

The Portuguese were among the first European explorers to reach India, and as a tie-in with its current Treasure Ships exhibition the art gallery will present a Fado music performance at its monthly free after-hours event tonight. First Fridays (5-9pm) will feature Portuguese actor Mariana Dias accompanied by guitarist Mike Bevan. Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices explores the cultural and spiritual exchange between Europe and Asia during the era of the spice trade, and comprises around 300 works. It is at the gallery until August 30.

Winterlicious

Get your skates on and head to Elder Park for the final weekend of Winterlicious, which features an undercover ice rink surrounded by logfire pits and tipi tents. There are 45-minute skating sessions every hour, from 3-11pm on Friday, 9am-11pm on Saturday and 9am-9pm on Sunday. You can warm up with hot chocolate, mulled wine and food.

Olly Murs

English pop singer Olly Murs is performing at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday night. Murs – who was runner-up on the British version of The X-Factor and then returned as a judge – is currently touring Australia on the back of new album Never Been Better. Doors open at 7pm, with Murs taking to the stage after 8.30pm.

De Novo – Sydney Dance Company

This touring triple bill from the Sydney Dance Company includes artistic director Rafael Bonachela’s Emergence, which is set to music composed by Nick Wales and sung by Sarah Blasko. Other works include Adelaide choreographer Larissa McGowan’s Fanatic, a pop-culture collision pitting Alien versus Predator, and Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekman’s hilarious Cacti. Be Your Self – Australian Dance Theatre

The ADT is presenting a reduced touring version of its acclaimed work Be Your Self at the Marion Culture Centre tonight (Friday). Choreographed by Garry Stewart, Be Your Self is described as an analysis of selfhood, with the dancers “transformed into erupting, powerful, creative entities”, accompanied by an unpredictable electronic score.

National Trouble Makers Union launch

There’s mischief and shenanigans coming to Port Adelaide’s tonight – and you can blame Bryan Dawe. The satirist is national secretary of the National Trouble Makers Union, which, in association with arts organisation Vitalstatistix, is holding its SA branch launch at the Waterside Workers Hall. Samstag Museum of Art

Two exhibitions are currently showing at the Samstag Museum of Art. Birth of the Cool comprises works by four painters (David Aspden, Sydney Ball, Michael Johnson and Dick Watkins) from the decade 1963-73, considered a golden era of avant-garde art in Australia. Geoff Wilson: Interrogated Landscape, features more than 70 works recognising the lifetime achievement of the South Australian artist. Both exhibitions continue until September 18.

Endless Pleasure – Carrick Hill

Opening this weekend at historic Carrick Hill’s new Australian Museum of Gardening, this exhibition presents a history of gardening and gardens through paintings, prints, decorative arts and ornaments, along with a collection of gardening implements. The exhibition continues until November 29 at Carrick Hill (46 Carrick Hill Drive, Springfield), which is open from 10am until 4.30pm Wednesday to Sunday.

The Perfectionist – Bakehouse Theatre

Theatre company Adapt Enterprises describes this production as “a play about marriage equality set in the ’70s”. David Williamson’s script tells the story of a love triangle involving a married couple and their Danish babysitter. It’s at The Bakehouse Theatre until August 8.

Nature Photographer of the Year

The natural beauty of Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea is celebrated through the Australian Geographic ANZANG Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition, showing at the South Australian Museum until August 30. It showcases the stunning images captured by finalists in the annual competition across categories including animal portrait, animal behaviour, landscape, botanical and threatened species. Forbidden Broadway – Blackwood Players

The Blackwood Players’ latest theatrical production is described as a “funny roast of Broadway”, presenting a tribute to some of the theatre’s greatest stars and songwriters. With cabaret-style seating and a cash bar, Forbidden Broadway is playing at the Blackwood Memorial Hall until August 15.

Dean-Moore-Dean Trio – Elder Hall

Recitals Australia is presenting a concert by composer performers and brothers Brett Dean (viola) and Paul Dean (clarinet) with pianist Lisa Moore at 8pm tonight (Friday) at Elder Hall. The program includes Mozart’s Kegelstatt trio, Brett Dean’s Sketches for Siegbert, and Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s Hommage à Robert Schumann Op.15.
