What’s on in Adelaide

DJ Driller will be playing at the River Deck Live Music Sessions this weekend.

You can catch some surprising guest DJs spinning tunes at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s River Deck Bar this weekend, or head to Rymill Park for what organisers promise will be a reinvigorated Schutzenfest.

Other events include “mindsports” in Light Square, Eddie Izzard’s Force Majeure, the Gilles Street Market, a live screening in Rundle Mall of the Asian Cup final and an evening soiree with Fashion Icons at the Art Gallery of SA.

Schutzenfest

Described on the official website and poster as “the largest folk and shooting festival in the Southern Hemisphere”, Schutzenfest will take place over Friday and Saturday. The celebration of German culture features bands, bellringers, accordion players, dancers, a bratwurst challenge and kids’ entertainment, with DJs turning up the party atmosphere in the evening. There’s also a “marktplatz” with German food and drink, plus a beer marquee and wine garden. Schutzenfest runs from 4pm until midnight today (Friday) and from noon until midnight tomorrow in its new location at Rymill Park.

The River Deck Live Music Sessions

This is the final weekend of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s River Deck Sessions and tonight (Friday) there will be a series of guest DJs spinning tunes – including Adelaide Festival artistic director David Sefton and incoming Adelaide Fringe director Heather Croall. Taking place at the riverside bar overlooking the Torrens, the sessions will feature Sitara duo Erin and Tess Fowler from 6.30pm tonight, followed by DJ sets from 9pm, while on Saturday you can catch singer-songwriter Naomi Keyte and DJ Driller. There will also be South American street food by La Chiva.

Mindsports in the Square

Get your brain in gear for a day of “mindsports” at this event in Light Square from noon until 4pm on Sunday, where players will compete in large-scale Scrabble and chess games. There will be food trucks on site, as well as Rubik’s Cube demonstrations, a crash course in cryptic crosswords and Sudoku races. People are encouraged to BYO picnic blanket and board games to the Splash Adelaide event.

Asian Cup final screening

Footy fever is coming to Rundle Mall on Saturday, with the Asian Cup final between Australia’s Socceroos and South Korea to be screened on the City Cross super-screen from 7pm. Info here.

Eddie Izzard’s Force Majeure

Actor and comedian Eddie Izzard’s epic Force Majeure tour – which has already played in 25 countries on five continents – lobs at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre on Saturday night. Force Majeure is said to showcase Izzard’s unique, “absurd” brand of comedy – including impersonations and rambling ad-lib – covering myriad topics both big and small. Last we looked, there were still tickets available for the show, which begins at 8pm.

Bowden Elite Team Series

Suffering Tour Down Under withdrawal already? Then head to Renewal SA’s Bowden development (corner Park Terrace and Fifth Street) on Saturday for a morning of activities planned to celebrate the season finale of the Bowden Elite Team Series cycle race. There will be a free bike safety clinic, face painting, kids’ crafts, and activities by Life. Be. In. It. You can also check out the Organic and Sustainable Food Market at Plant 1.

Fashion Icons Up Late

The final event in the Art Gallery of South Australia’s January Up Late events is titled 90s to Now and promises “rad tunes” along with hip-hop dancers and a screening of the film Bill Cunningham New York. 90s to Now runs from 5.30pm until 10pm tonight (Friday) and coincides with the gallery’s spring-summer exhibition of Parisian fashion, Fashion Icons, which continues run until February 15.

Gilles Street Market

More than 90 stalls will be selling fashion and accessories – including vintage items and creations by South Australian designers – at the Gilles Street Market this Sunday. The market is held at the Gilles Street Primary School in the city from 10am until 4pm, and also features DJs and food stalls.

Moonlight Cinema

The Russell Crowe movie The Water Diviner, which last night shared the Australian Academy of Cinema, Television and the Arts (AACTA) award for best film, is screening tonight at Adelaide’s Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park. Saturday’s film is the latest in the Hobbit franchise – The Battle of the Five Armies – while Sunday will feature an advance screening of Selma, about Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights. Entry to the cinema is via Plane Tree Drive; gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown.

Caligula’s Horse – Enigma Bar

Brisbane prog-rock band Caligula’s Horse are on the road promoting the latest video from their sophomore release, The Tide, The Thief & River’s End. The five-piece outfit – who describe their music as “channelling the raw honesty of classic rock with the skill of progressive metal” – will play in 18-plus gig at Adelaide’s Enigma Bar on Saturday night.

Ignite Unley free outdoor cinema

The comedy-drama The Secret Life of Walter Mitty will be screened at Heywood Park tonight (Friday) as part of Ignite Unley’s program of free outdoor cinema events. There will be food (including popcorn), music and kids’ activities from 6pm, with the movie scheduled to begin at sunset.

Iridescence – SA Museum

This exhibition at the South Australian Museum features beetles, bubbles, shells, fossils and myriad other items that illustrate the beauty of iridescence, “where colour is seen despite the absence of pigment”. Exhibits have all been drawn from the museum’s own collection, and will be on display until March 15, 2015.

Brighton Jetty Classic Sculptures

This annual indoor and outdoor exhibition of sculptures comprises more than 100 works on display at the Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubrooms, Bindarra Reserve and along the Esplanade Sculptures Walk. It will be open from 8am until 8pm every day until February.
