Christmas Proms goes retro

Dec 02, 2014

“A little bit fun and a little bit cheeky” is how singer Michael Falzon describes the program for this year’s Christmas Proms at the Adelaide Festival Centre.

The annual sing-along will be both a celebration of the festive season and a trip down memory lane for some, with 1950s and ’60s swing-infused music.

Falzon, who had his breakthrough lead role in the London West End show We Will Rock You and has notched up numerous cabaret, theatre and concert credits since, will headline alongside fellow performer Rachael Beck, recently seen in the touring musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

The two were here earlier this year for the Adelaide Cabaret Festival and have shared the stage in numerous productions.

Falzon says he was keen to work with Beck again and accepting the decision to participate in the 2014 Swingin’ Christmas Proms was a “no-brainer”.

“Adelaide is a very welcoming city.

“I like Adelaide very much because it’s a cultured audience, a discerning audience, but because of the nature of many of the festivals here, it’s also a fun audience.

“With this event, we’re hoping to have a lot of fun.”

This year’s Proms will once again feature the 34-piece Adelaide Art Orchestra, under the direction of conductor Timothy Sexton, with the likelihood of an appearance by Santa and popular clowns ‘Moose’ and ‘Boppa’.

The program is being created by Sexton, and Falzon says he is expected to “mix things up a little bit, with a bit of swing, a bit of pop, as well as the Christmas favourites”.

A Swingin’ Christmas Proms, suitable for ages five and up, will be presented over four sessions on December 12 and 13 at the Festival Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre.
