Möbius: secrets, spies and honey-traps

Apr 03, 2014

French star Jean Dujardin takes the lead in this stylish thriller from director Éric Rochant. Dujardin plays Gregory, a Russian secret agent who likes to mix business with pleasure.

Gregory is on the trail of Ivan Rostrovski, the archetypical ruthless Russian oligarch.  Cécile de France is gorgeous as the smart and sexy financial genius Alice, whom Gregory is using as the bait that will lure Ivan into his net.

The film opens with sweeping shots of Monaco’s stunning coastline, setting the scene for a classic thriller with glamorous locations and good-looking spies.  The plot takes a few twists and turns as the CIA gets involved and romantic entanglements threaten to ruin the operation.

Oscar-winner Dujardin (The Artist) plays a forceful lead role, but Tim Roth steals the show as Ivan.

This is a surprisingly conservative French film, with very little nudity and only a few strange slow-motion sex scenes – lots of sighing but no skin!

Alliance Francaise hosted an espionage party last week for the first screening of Möbius, with music by DJ Tr!p, artworks by Joshua Smith, a costume contest, and door prizes from French lingerie brand Simone Perele.  If you missed the party, you can still catch the film:  Möbius is screening again at 9pm on Friday, April 4, at Palace Nova.

The 25th Alliance Francaise French Film Festival continues in Adelaide until April 8, with the closing night party to feature comedy classic Mon Oncle by director Jacques Tati.
