The Art Gallery of South Australia’s flagship contemporary art event, the Adelaide Biennial, opens this weekend with a rich events program of artist talks and art making workshops.

Pivoting around the idea of difficult conversations and adventurous ideas the program will offer inroads in to the curatorial and artistic intent behind this survey exhibition.

When conceiving the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art, Curator, Nick Mitzevich was re-reading Robert Hughes. The Fatal Shore, in particular, struck a chord. ‘Its epic explorations of the political through the personal informed my thinking, while its strange ironies and vivid juxtapositions of beauty and brutality during such a dark period of Australian history perhaps set the rhythm for this exhibition, titled Dark Heart.’

‘In its intention Dark Heart offers an inherently emotional experience – immersive and visceral.  It is my motivating belief that by delving into the darkness, to those places we seldom see, we can move into the light,’ Mr Mitzevich said.

On Saturday 1 March hear from artists Patricia Piccinini, Martu artists and Lynette Wallworth, Brook Andrew, Del Kathryn Barton, eX de Medici and Alex Seton. On Sunday 2 March the program will feature the senior lawmen from the Kulata Project, Warwick Thornton, Richard Lewer, Ben Quility and Ian Strange.

The Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art made its entrance onto the Australian contemporary art scene in 1990, and since that time it has continued to engage and confront its Australian audiences. It remains the country’s longest running survey of contemporary Australian art and demonstrates the Art Gallery’s unswerving commitment to current Australian art.

The 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Dark Heart opens tomorrow March 1 and runs until May 11 at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Celebrate the opening weekend with free artist talks and art making workshops. View the full program online at www.adelaidebiennial.com.au
