The Moonlight Cinema is back in Botanic Park.

You know summer’s here when the cinema under the stars begins – and this year Adelaideans have a choice of outdoor movie venues. Also on this weekend is Glendi Greek Festival, Croatian Food & Wine Fest, a Mexican cinema showcase and more.

Moonlight Cinema

Pack your picnic and head to Botanic Park, folks, the Moonlight Cinema is back. Screening this weekend is Rush (Friday night), the Formula One flick about the rivalry between Niki Lauda and James Hunt; Hugh Jackman’s X-Men spin-off The Wolverine (Saturday night), and animated family comedy Turbo. Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown. If you want to get fancy, you can fork out for a “gold grass” ticket complete with reserved beanbag in a prime position.

Open-Air Cinema

For the first time, the Open-Air Cinema has included Adelaide in its national program. Screenings begin this Sunday on the Glenelg Foreshore in front of the surf club, although the opening-night film (About Time) has already sold out. The cinema also includes live music and “crazy lawn games”.

Hola Mexico Film Festival

Armchair travellers can take a whirlwind 10-day tour of Mexico without leaving Adelaide, thanks to the latest film fest at the Mercury Cinema. Hola Mexico Film Festival opens tonight (Friday) with a fiesta (think beer, tequila and tacos) and screening of the comedy We are the Nobles. The program also features dramas and documentaries, such as The Convict Patient, which screens tomorrow and tells the story of the man who tried to avenge a 1968 massacre by assassinating the Mexican president.

WP-FestaFešta: Croatian Food & Wine Festival

According to the official website, fešta is basically the Croatian way to describe a good time – which sounds fine by us. This one-day annual festival on Saturday at the Croatian Sports Centre in Gepps Cross is a celebration of Croatian culture through traditional food wine, music and folk dancing. There will also be soccer matches and a fireworks display.

Glendi Greek Festival

Over in Bonython Park, SA’s Greek community is celebrating the 35th year of the annual Glendi Festival. Running on both Saturday and Sunday, the program includes a smorgasbord of  Greek food (souvlakia, barbecue octopus, spanakopita and baklava and other tastiness), cultural displays, cooking demos, live entertainment, kids’ activities – and, of course, plate smashing.

Deep South

This roots, blues and folk festival is running across Saturday and Sunday at The Gov, with a line-up including The Baker Suite, Heather Frahn and The Moonlight Tide, Billy Bob’s BB      Q Boys, Lachy Doley, The Yearlings and more.

‘Granny Chic’ Christmas Festival

You can expect baked goodies, jams and chutneys galore when the South Australian Country Women’s Association hosts its inaugural Christmas Festival in Kent Town on Friday and Saturday. Cutely titled “Granny Chic” and held in the gardens of the association’s property at 30 Dequetteville Terrace, the event will include stalls, Devonshire teas, a Christmas tree exhibition, sausage sizzle and live entertainment. Members have also channelled their inner hipster, yarn bombing trees around the property.

 Ahn Do

The Happiest Refugee – aka comedian Ahn Do – is bringing his live show back to Adelaide with a performance at Her Majesty’s Theatre on Saturday night. Inspired by his book of the same name, The Happiest Refugee combines stand-up with true stories, photos and filmed pieces.

Madama Butterfly

Saturday night is your last chance to see Opera SA’s presentation of Puccini’s heart-wrenching tale of a young Japanese woman’s doomed marriage to an American navy lieutenant. InDaily’s reviewer says South Australian talent Joanna McWaters revels in the lead role of Cio-Cio San in what he describes as a stylish and striking production at the Festival Theatre.

WP-DysonMia Dyson, Liz Stringer and Jen Cloher

The promoters are spruiking this tour as one of the highlights of the indie-roots music scene in 2013, and it’s coming to Adelaide’s Wheatsheaf Hotel on Saturday, with a second show at the Singing Gallery in McLaren Vale on Sunday. The singer-songwriter trio have 11 albums and a number of ARIA awards between them, and have also recorded three new tracks together for an EP released to coincide with their tour, on which they’re joined by Danny McKenna on drums and Tim Keegan on bass.

Adelaide Chamber Singers

Christmas music will be a focus of the Adelaide Chamber Singers’ final 2013 concerts on Saturday night in St Peter Cathedral, North Adelaide, and Sunday afternoon at the Church of the Epiphany in Crafers. Titled deo gratias (“thanks be to God”), the concert program includes Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and “A Boy Was Born”, as well as Charpentier’s “Midnight Mass” and the premiere of a new work by ACS director Carl Crossin.

Closet Land

Based on a 1991 film of the same name, this psychological thriller centres on a children’s book author who is interrogated by a mysterious government official over a supposedly subversive new work. The play, rated M15+, is being presented by Growling Grin Productions at the Bakehouse Theatre until November 30. (See InDaily review.)

British Film Festival

This is the final weekend for this showcase of British Cinema at Palace Nova Eastend, with screenings including Brief Encounter, Still Life, Good Vibrations and Lawrence of Arabia. The closing night session is Philomena, which stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan and is based on the true story of a mother’s search for the son she was forced to give up as a teenager.

Shorts Outback

A selection of the top films from the 2013 Shorts Film Festival is heading to the Flinders Ranges on Saturday. Shorts Outback takes place at the Wilpena Pound Resort, with a barbecue dinner and outdoor screenings among the gum trees including  Silver Shorts winner Sleight of Hand and Black Shorts winner Dance Free.
