Station Stays SA – See our backyard through our eyes

If you’ve ever dreamed of living like a local in the Outback, station stays are one of the most relaxing ways to do it.

Mt Freeling Station

Location
Take the Strzelecki Track from Lyndhurst and you will see the signpost to Mt Freeling Homestead after approximately 40 kilometres and you will arrive at the Homestead after another 20 kilometres (approximately a total of one hour from Lyndhurst)

Accommodation
The Mount Freeling shearers quarters have recently been upgraded, and offer basic but comfortable accommodation with nine twin rooms, kitchen and ablution block.

Experience
A great day trip from the Mt Freeling Homestead is to head to Mt Fitton which was a prosperous sheep property in its own right during the 1920’s. Mt Fitton Station is now part of Mt Freeling but the remains of the substantial homestead, complete with dilapidated piano and AGA stove can be seen. Just a few hundred metres on from the Mt Fitton homestead, you can see the remains of a copper mine and the results of a seismic test explosion that worked a bit better than expected!

Fortunately for the yellow footed ring tailed wallabies, it provides the perfect habitat for them and you might be lucky enough to see a number of them displaying their rock hopping skills.

About Us
Mt Freeling Station is a 1000 square kilometre pastoral property (currently largely destocked), located in the rugged far northern tip of the Flinders Ranges, approximately one hour’s drive from Lyndhurst, and an eight hour drive from Adelaide. The Northern Flinders contain some of the most challenging conditions and roads in the Flinders region and those who are willing to drive the extra couple of hours past Wilpena will be rewarded. The best time to visit is in winter, where temperatures are more favourable and the fly count is reduced (a bit). The statistical probability of rain is the same on any day of the year – and we welcome it!

Horseshoe Rim

Location
Central Flinders Ranges, 320 kilometres from Adelaide

Accommodation
The stand alone Wilderness Cabin offers privacy and comfort amid spectacular scenery. It is nestled among rugged hills and overlooks a large dam stocked with fish. The self-contained cabin can comfortably sleep up to eight people in two bedrooms: one with a queen size bed, the other with a double bed and two sets of bunks. The open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area is comfortably furnished, with the kitchen fully equipped. The cabin has solar powered lighting, gas appliances and a very efficient slow combustion heater with cut firewood supplied. Outside is a gas BBQ and campfire area.

Experience
A day in the Wilderness Cabin: Wake to the sounds of birds and have a coffee watching the sheep and native animals come to drink from the dam below. A fifteen minute walk following the creek will lead you to a sheer rock cliff which with rain becomes a waterfall. Experienced four wheel drivers can drive the 4WD  track through rugged bushland and stop for photos on hilltops with amazing Flinders Ranges views. Drive or walk the track and sign your name in the visitors book on the highest peak in the Horseshoe, Mt Stokes. At  sunset relax on the verandah, drink in hand, watching the colours change on the surrounding hills. At night,  light the campfire, marvel at the stars and enjoy the solitude.
