Time for a night away

Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello joins Explore SA each Wednesday to share his holiday inspirations and latest tips on exploring South Australia with friends and family.

Each week Cosi will suggest a selection of beautiful landscapes to visit, events to get involved in and fantastic activities to enjoy.

With our lives being so busy, romance can easily be forgotten or completely taken out of a relationship as other priorities jump into our foreground. Add in children to a busy household and you are excused for not spending one-on-one time with your partner. But should you be excused?

I don’t think so. I think you need to work harder, or be more organised, to make time with your loved one. So where should you go to re-kindle the flame in regional South Australia? WOW – where to start? There seems to be romance around every corner; beaches, rivers, hills or vines are all perfect places to say I love you, and South Australia has them all.

The most memorable night my wife and I recently enjoyed was at The Louise in the beautiful Barossa. Located close to a range of wineries and Maggie Beer’s Farm Shop, The Louise prides itself on perfection.

As soon as you arrive and check-in, you establish that this place is very indulgent and the owners have thought of everything you need for a romantic night or two away. The rooms are unreal; my wife was in love the moment she walked in the door. I am more of a swag by the campfire kind of guy but my wife loves the finer things in life; and she loved this place so much it wouldn’t surprise me if she calls our next born daughter Louise. She loved the interior design, artwork, layout and those luxurious sheets that make you go ‘ohhhhhh’.

I really liked the outdoor shower – and it’s not as Maslin Beach as it may sound. You are completely protected with privacy but as there is no roof, you can adore the blue skies, or stars, and completely relax.  Just mind the helicopters with telescopes.

There is more to this luxury accommodation than your room though. The best meal I have ever had in South Australia was at The Louise’s restaurant Appellation. It’s just amazing. I’m no food writer so my best description of this restaurant’s meals is – fantastic! Each course is a feast for the eyes and mouth and is served with a specific wine to perfectly accompany it. You just have to find a way to experience this place. I love the emphasis the chef has on local food too.

While you’re in the Barossa, make sure you buy some local produce too by visiting the Barossa Farmers’ Market held every Saturday near Angaston. Get a market burger, it will change your life. Repeat, eat a market burger… it will change your life.

So arrange someone to baby sit the Iphone and flick the kids to silent and go away with your partner. You’ll soon rediscover all the reasons you fell in love with them in the first place. Then when you get home, turn your phone back on and update your Facebook status to “Back in love…thanks SA.”
