Spend the night in a ghost town

In the heart of Innes National Park are the ruins of the little gypsum mining town of Inneston which once supported 200 miners, shopkeepers and their families.

Today, it’s a ghost town except for seven renovated miners’ cottages managed by the park that you can rent by the night. It’s a brilliant spot to relax, chill out and wake to the sight of emus, kangaroos, Tammar wallabies and mallee fowl.

For a great insight into this former close knit community of Inneston Village, take a step back in time on the Inneston Historic walk. The two kilometre loop takes about one hour and interpretive signs along the way tell the story of the village. In its heyday it was completely self-sufficient, with its own school, post office, bakery, general store, and tennis court.

A short walk away is the clear, brackish Inneston Lake where stomatelites grow. They are very rare marine growths similar to coral built by algae and sediment.

Innes National Park has a host of walking trails to explore, with fantastic flora and fauna, and beautiful panoramic views.  The walking trail to the new West Cape lookout is not to be missed, with the lookout providing 360-degree vistas of Innes National Park.

Inneston is a great base to explore the national park and lower Yorke Peninsula.
