Nano is a busy breakfast and lunch spot with an Italian flavour in Ebenezer Place.

For many people who work in the East End, the licensed café is a staple for coffee or lunch, with reasonably prized choices and plenty of seating both inside and out.

All the bread products are made on site by owner Stephan Capoccia, and you’ll often find his wife Filomena and their son Lucio behind the counter.

Favourite menu item: A little gem on the Nano’s lunch menu is the Tortellini Brodo ($9.20). This warming homemade chicken broth with beef ravioli, spinach and a Grana Padano cheese topping is a perfect option for eating in the café or taking back to your desk in a takeaway container. The serving size is generous and a bowl will definitely satiate any appetite.

The Tortellini Brodo uses ravioli made by Buona Pasta on OG Road and comes with a fresh, warm bread roll and butter. “It’s the best ravioli in the world,” says Lucio.

This dish is an East End secret that really needs to be shared as the colder months approach.

Other options: There’s a blackboard menu with a range of breakfast and lunch options (everything from omelettes to pasta), and the tempting big glass display cabinets includes a good selection of ready-made choices under $10 – including “Nano sticks” (made with focaccia), pizzas slices and salads.

Something sweet: It’s hard to go past the deliciously doughy zeppole (an Italian style of doughnut) or the thick, moist banana bread.
